The Blue Morpho

Rakkaat taiteen ystävät; Olen viettänyt viime kuukaudet kiireisenä uuden teoskokonaisuuden parissa, jota valmistelen marraskuussa avautuvaa näyttelyä varten. Inspiraation tunteminen joka päivä ei ole itsestäänselvyys. Tyypillinen päiväni alkaa aamukävelyllä. Hedelmällisimmät kävelyt ovat niitä, jotka teen yksin ja hiljaisuudessa. Kerään inspiraatiota ympäristöstäni. Kotimme lähellä virtaa pieni puro, jonka äärelle menen katsomaan vesilintuja ja kuuntelemaan tähän vuodenaikaan sirittäviä kaskaita.

Vaikka ammennan suurimman osan inspiraatiostani luonnosta, maalauksissani on lähes aina jokin keskushahmo. Tämä hahmo käy vuoropuhelua ympäristönsä kanssa ja on vuorovaikutuksessa sen kanssa. Hahmolla on tärkeä rooli sekä sommittelussa että tarinankerronnassa. Hahmo on myös minun ääneni.

Jotkut päivät voivat olla hyvin turhauttavia. Vaikka saavun työhuoneelleni, taikaa ei aina synny. Olen siellä vastaanottamassa, mutta yhteys ei aina muodostu. Kun näin käy, pidän tauon ja palaan myöhemmin yrittämään uudelleen.

Olen noin puolivälissä uuden kokoelmani kanssa. En halua paljastaa uusia maalauksia ennen kuin ne kaikki ovat valmiita. Sosiaalinen media luo suurta painetta näyttää jatkuvasti jotain uutta, mutta minulle jo pienenkin vilauksen näyttäminen pilaisi yllätyksen. Myös muiden mielipiteet liian varhaisessa vaiheessa voivat muuttaa teosten suuntaa, joten siitäkin syystä päätän olla näyttämättä uusia töitä ennen kuin ne ovat kaikki valmiita.

Sillä välin minulla on uusi piirrustus jaettavaksi kanssanne: ”Blue Morpho”. Olen aina pitänyt ajatuksesta tehdä pienikokoista taidetta – pieniä, yksityiskohtaisia teoksia, jotka voivat olla esillä yksinään tai muodostaa yhdessä muiden pienten teosten kanssa suuremman kokonaisuuden. Dear Art Friends,

I’ve been busy these past few months getting together a new body of work ready to exhibit in November. Feeling inspired every day isn’t a given. My typical day begins with a morning walk. The most fruitful walks are when I do them in silence and alone. I gather inspiration from around me. There’s a creek that runs close to our home and I go there to see waterbirds and listen to the cicadas this time of year.
 
Even though I draw most of my inspiration from nature; there is almost always a central figure to my paintings, that figure converses and interacts with its surroundings. The figure plays an important role in composition and storytelling. The figure is also my voice.
 
Some days can be very frustrating. Even though I show up at my studio, the magic doesn’t always happen. I’m there to ‘receive’, but the ‘communication’ does not come to fruition. When this happens, I just take a break and then come back to try again later.

I’m about half way with my new collection. I don’t want to unravel the new paintings until I am done with all of them. There is a great pressure from social media to have something new to show at all times, but for me showing even a glimpse of the new work will just spoil the surprise. People’s opinions too early in the game can also alter the direction of the work, so for that reason too, I chose to not show any of the new works until they are all ready.

Meanwhile, I have a new illustration to share with you. “Blue Morpho”. I’ve always liked the idea of small sized art. Little intricate pieces that can be hung up on their own or collected as a part of many other smaller works to create a larger whole. I am offering this piece for collection through my Secret Store. Stay tuned for more moth and insect inspired art as my small works collection.
